HP LaserJet and HP LaserJet-Compatible Printers ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ The LASERJET.DRV supports HP LaserJet** printers using Printer Control Language (PCL), and three device font types: o Your printer is shipped with one or more internal fonts, which are fonts permanently stored in its memory. When you indicate printer model during installation, you automatically set up these fonts. o You can purchase cartridge fonts, (fonts that have additional character shapes, alphabets, or graphic character sets) in a package that fits into a slot on your printer. The cartridge provides additional memory to the printer, with the font shapes already loaded. o Some cartridges include extended fonts, that enable you to print characters (for example, bar codes) that are not included in the character sets supplied with your operating system. o Soft fonts are optional fonts shipped as files. Some fonts have predetermined sizes, and some can be scaled to size from within a program. At the time of printing, the fonts selected for a print job are downloaded, or copied, to the memory of your printer. The capacity of printer memory determines the number of different fonts you can select for downloading with a particular print job. To take advantage of fonts: 1. The device drivers that come with your OS/2* system contain a list of cartridge names catalogued by the printer manufacturer. If you have a cartridge, and want to install its fonts, display the Printer Properties window for the driver, then select Fonts. Installing entails adding font names to the list of Installed fonts in the Font Installer window. If you purchase fonts separately, the font manufacturer might supply a separate installation program that you must run before you can add fonts in the Font Installer window. 2. Exiting the Font Installer window re-displays the Printer Properties window. In the Printer Properties window, you mark as active, any cartridge loaded into a printer slot. Your printer might have one or more cartridge slots. 3. Select the fonts for a particular job from within your program. You can mix internal, cartridge, and downloadable fonts in any print job. Installing Hewlett-Packard AutoFont Support ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ The AutoFont support files provided with Hewlett-Packard** typeface diskettes and cartridges contain information needed to install the typefaces. 1. Using DOS, run the AutoFont Support Installation program (or the Type Director 2.0 program). Make note of the directory into which the program installs its diskette files. 2. Display the Printer Properties window for the driver; then select Fonts. 3. In the New font directory field, type the name of the directory containing the AutoFont Support files. For more information on typefaces and AutoFont support files, consult the Hewlett-Packard documentation. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 9. Font Symbol Sets ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ A symbol set determines a mapping between the machine-readable value of a character and the font in which it is printed. When installing Hewlett-Packard** fonts for laser printers, the New soft fonts, New cartridge fonts, and Installed fonts fields list symbol sets by using the following abbreviations: US ASCII R8 Roman 8, US ASCII, plus additional European characters PM Symbols map one to one with code-page 850 PC PC-8, corresponding with code-page 437 PD PC-8DN Danish and Norwegian code-page 437N DT Desktop, US ASCII plus additional useful symbols. A window appears in which the extended symbol sets on your cartridge are identified with their own abbreviations. For example, a listing of the files stored on a diskette. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> install ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ To copy software components from distribution media to specified areas (directories) of a hard disk. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> device font ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ A font particular to the printer. Some device fonts have size and language-support restrictions. Printer device fonts are internal to the printer hardware. They can be installed on a card or downloaded to printer memory. They are printed faster than system fonts. See also system font. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> system font ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ One of the fonts available for screen display and printing. You can specify any size for this font, and it supports any language. Contrast with device font. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> check box ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ A square box with associated text that represents one choice in a set of multiple choices. When you select a choice, a check mark appears in the check box to indicate that the choice is in effect. You can clear the check box by selecting the choice again. Contrast with radio button. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> check mark ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ A symbol that shows that a choice is currently active. This symbol is used in menus and check boxes. See check box. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> font ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ A family of characters of a given size and style; for example, 9-point Helvetica. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> spooler ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ A program that puts print jobs on one or more queues and removes a print job from a queue to send the job to a printer. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> extended fonts ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ Fonts containing characters that are not included in the Presentation Manager* character set. For example, you can purchase extended fonts called dingbats, which include large check marks and other graphics that represent bullets on charts. Bar code symbols, such as those used by the post office to sort zip codes, are also available as extended fonts. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 10. Help for Font Installer ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ Use this window to determine which fonts are available for selection from your programs and to add fonts as you purchase or need them. The Available fonts field lists the name of any cartridge font or soft font already installed. To install new fonts: 1. Insert your font diskette into drive A. 2. Select Open. 3. Select the fonts you want to add in the New soft fonts or the New cartridges field. 4. If the cartridge has extended fonts, you can select the Extended symbol sets for cartridges to list them. A window appears. 5. If the Extended Symbol Set Support window appears, select the extended fonts you want, and then select the OK push button. 6. Select Add. Selecting Delete allows you to delete unnecessary fonts. Help for Installed Fonts ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ This list contains the names of those cartridges and soft fonts currently installed. You can scroll the list vertically to see more fonts, or horizontally to see the complete description of fonts with long identifiers. The at sign (@) precedes the name of each cartridge. The list identifies cartridge fonts by cartridge letter and font name. For soft fonts, the list shows symbol set and orientation. A greater than symbol (>) marks a font that is currently in use by a program. You cannot delete a font marked by >. Related Information: Font symbol sets ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 12. Help for New Font Directory ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ Use this field to indicate the location of font files you want to install. Usually, you install new font names from a list on a diskette, so the field contains the initial value A:\. You can type a different path ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 13. Help for New Soft Fonts ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ This field displays the names of fonts stored in the New font directory. To fill the list: 1. Insert the appropriate diskette in drive A, or fill in the New font directory field with the location of the fonts on your hard disk. 2. Select Open. You can scroll the list to see more fonts. Select any fonts you want to install, then select Add to add the selected fonts to the Installed fonts field. Help for New Cartridges ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ This field displays the names of cartridge fonts you can add to the Installed fonts field. All known cartridge fonts are listed on the Printer Driver Diskettes that come with your OS/2* system. If you purchase new fonts, the cartridge names are listed on the diskettes that come with your cartridge. To fill the list: 1. Insert the appropriate diskette in drive A. 2. Select Open. You can scroll the list to see more cartridge fonts. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 15. Help for Extended Symbol Sets for Cartridges ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ Select Extended symbol sets for cartridges if you want to select extended fonts from a cartridge. If you are adding a cartridge that does not have extended fonts, and this field has a check mark in it, deselect the field. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 16. Help for Open ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ Select Open to read font names from the drive and directory identified in the New font directory field. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 17. Help for Add ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ Select Add to add selected New soft fonts or New cartridges to the Installed fonts field. If you selected Extended symbol sets for cartridges, and your cartridge has extended fonts, a window appears from which you select the extended symbol sets you want to use. If your cartridge does not have extended fonts, and Extended symbol sets for cartridges is selected, a message appears that indicates there are no extended fonts. Select OK to continue installing your standard fonts. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 18. Help for Delete ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ Select Delete to remove selected font names from the Installed fonts list. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 19. Help for Font Installer - Extended Symbol Set Support ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ Use the Font Installer - Extended Symbol Set Support window to select any extended fonts you want to use from the cartridge identified at the top of the window. 1. Select one or more typefaces in the Available typefaces field. The Extended symbol sets field lists all the extended symbol sets available for the selected typefaces. 2. Help for Available Typefaces ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ This field lists all the typefaces (for example, Helvetica, Line Printer) available on the cartridge you selected in the Font Installer window. Select from the Available typefaces list those typefaces for which you want to add extended fonts. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 21. Help for Extended Symbol Sets ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ This field lists all the extended fonts included on your cartridge for the typefaces you selected in the Available typefaces field. Each extended symbol set has an abbreviation that identifies it, followed by a short description. Consult the documentation included with your cartridge, if you want to see a picture of a particular symbol set identified in the list. Select one or more symbol sets, then select OK to continue installing your cartridge. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> hard disk ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ A rigid disk in a hard disk drive that you cannot remove. The hard disk can be partitioned into storage areas of variable sizes that are subdivided into directories and subdirectories. See also partition. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> partition ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ A fixed-size division of storage. On an IBM personal computer hard disk, one of four possible storage areas of variable size; one might be accessed by DOS, and each of the others might be assigned to another operating system. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> path ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ A statement that indicates where a file is stored on a particular drive. The path consists of all the directories that must be opened to get to a particular file. The directory names are separated by the backslash (\). The first backslash represents the root directory. For example, a file named things that is located in the EDIT directory of drive C has a path of: c:\edit\things A path is sometimes followed by a file name and a file name extension (if there is one). It is sometimes preceded by a drive letter and a colon (:). ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 22. Help for Printer Properties of HP LaserJet ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ The heading of the Printer Properties window identifies the model HP LaserJet** or compatible printer you have selected. Use the fields in this window to indicate the form loaded in each tray of your laser printer, and any font cartridges inserted in the printer. The push buttons give access to other properties windows which you use to define additional forms, and to identify fonts you have purchased for your printer. For a detailed explanation of each field, select from the list below: o Paper source o Active cartridges o Fonts o Forms o Defaults o Cancel o OK Related information: HP LaserJet and HP LaserJet-compatible printers ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 23. Help for Paper Source ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ This field provides a place to assign forms to each tray your printer accommodates. Thus, if your printer has two trays, Upper and Lower appear here. If you use different size paper, envelopes, or preprinted special forms in one or more of your paper trays, you can specify a different paper form for each tray. Each tray has a form field with the currently selected form displayed. 1. Select the arrow to the right of the form field to see the list of available forms. 2. Select the form you want. You can scroll the list to see more forms. You can add more forms to the list by selecting the Forms push button at the bottom of the window. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 24. Help for Active Cartridges ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ This list contains the names of installed cartridge fonts. Select from the list any cartridges currently inserted in the printer. Because some laser printers have more than one cartridge slot, Max. = indicates the total number of cartridges you can select. If you attempt to select more than that maximum, the next cartridge name you select replaces the first one selected, and you hear a warning tone. If you have a cartridge that is not listed, select the Fonts push button; a window appears that enables you to add your cartridge to the list. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 25. Help for Memory ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ This list contains the possible sizes of installed Memory in this printer (in K bytes). Select the total amount of memory phyically installed in your printer, i.e., the amount of standard memory (512K or 640K or 1024K) plus the amount of memory on the memory expansion card(s) (if any, 1024K, 2048K, 4096K, etc.) installed in this printer. If you are unsure about this value, run the printer Self Test to display the amount of installed memory. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 26. Help for Page Protection ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ This list contains the possible types of Page Protection for this printer. Select the same page protection type you set on your printer (OFF, LTR, A4 or LGL). The default setting on the printer is page protection OFF. If you are unsure about this setting, run the printer Self Test to display the type of page protection in effect. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 27. Help for Defaults ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ Select Defaults for an opportunity to specify number of copies, orientation, resolution, choice of form, paper feed, duplex printing, and fast (downloaded) system fonts. These default choices are used if you do not specify these types of job properties for a particular print job or for the queue to which you submit that job. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 28. Help for Fonts ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ Select Fonts for access to the Font Installer window. You can then view a list of currently installed soft fonts and cartridge fonts, or you can add fonts to those listed as installed. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 29. Help for Forms ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ Select Forms to add forms to those listed for each paper tray. Add a form if the defined forms do not include a paper size that matches the paper loaded in your printer. You can also add a form to assign a unique name to a preprinted form, even if it conforms to a size already defined. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 30. Help for LaserJet Job Properties ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ Use Job Properties to request multiple copies, specify orientation, resolution, and elect to download system fonts. You can select a tray-loaded form or indicate that you will feed forms by hand, and specify output bin if your printer has more than one place for holding printed pages. You also can select dual-sided printing for printer models offering this feature. Some programs provide access to this window, enabling you to assign these job properties for a specific document or template. When setting up a queue, you select job property defaults that take effect if the program does not override them. Help for Copies ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ In this field, type the number of copies of each page you want printed. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 32. Help for Orientation ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ Select Portrait (upright) to print the top of the printed material in the same direction as the top of the paper. Letters, books, and reports usually have portrait orientation. Select Landscape (rotated) to print perpendicular to the direction in which the paper is fed. Landscape is frequently selected for documents such as spreadsheets or plotted graphics, which are wider than they are long. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 33. Help for Resolution ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ Select the number, in dots-per-inch (dpi) increments, that represents the resolution in which you want graphics produced on your printer. Laser printers process device fonts in the highest available resolution, and can mix high resolution text with lower resolution graphics. Select the highest number for the best quality. Because printing in high resolution takes longer, you can reserve this setting for final documents. Select a low number to print faster; for example, to produce drafts of documents. Note: Your printer must have enough memory to hold the dots composing a print job. For laser printers with less than one megabyte of memory, select 75 or 150 dpi to print a full-page graphic, a dense graphic, or a full-page spreadsheet that has horizontal and vertical lines mixed with text. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 34. Help for Fast System Fonts ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ Select one of the radio buttons to enable or disable downloading of OS/2* system fonts. The preselected choice, Enabled, copies system fonts to the printer memory which allows your job to print faster and requires a smaller spool file than one that has the document in graphic font form. Select Disabled when overlaying system fonts with graphics. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 35. Help for First Page ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ This list contains all the forms defined for this printer. You can scroll the list to see more form names. Select the form on which the first page of your job should print. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 36. Help for Remaining Pages ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ This list contains all the forms defined for this printer. You can scroll the list to see more form names. Select the form on which all pages after the first page of your job should print. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 37. Help for Form ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ Use this field to select a particular form for a print job. Selecting the arrow displays a list containing the names of all forms defined for the printer. Select the form of your choice. Because you associate form names with a specific tray (in the Printer Properties window), selecting a form from this window causes the printer to feed paper from the appropriate tray, if loaded, or wait for the correct tray, if not loaded. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 38. Help for Paper Feed ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ Select one of the radio buttons to indicate the source for the paper form. The preselected choice, Automatic, means paper feeds from a tray without human intervention. Select Manual to have the printer wait for you to manually feed odd size forms, transparencies, or other media that should not feed from paper trays. If you select Manual, you are prompted to insert the paper before the printer processes each page of a job. Select Automatic mixed to use one form for the first page of your document, and a different form for subsequent pages. The type of form for Automatic or Manual paper feed is selected in the Form list. Selecting Automatic mixed causes two lists to appear. One form is selected in the First page list and a different form in the Remaining pages list. Help for 1 or 2 Sided Printing ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ If your printer has the capability to print on both sides of a page, you can select one of the radio buttons in this field. 1 sided, the preselected choice prints pages on one side only. 2 sided book prints on both sides, with the top line on each page in the same location. 2 sided flip prints on both sides of the paper, but the top line on the back page corresponds to the top line of the front page. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 40. Help for Define Forms ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ In this window, you can add, delete, or change the size of named forms defined for this printer. 1. To add a form, type a unique form name. 2. Specify the units in which you prefer to see measurements: inches or centimeters. 3. Select the arrow to display the size list, then select the size you want to assign to the name. Help for Size ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ This field expands to a list containing form size descriptions. Select the arrow to see the contents of the list. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> resolution ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ Density or sharpness of an image. For bit-map material, resolution is expressed in dots-per-inch, with higher quality output having more dots-per- inch. Resolution can be adjusted for some printers. Low-resolution images are printed faster, but appear coarser than high-resolution images. A printer's memory size can limit the resolution you can choose. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> spooling ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ The process of temporarily storing print jobs while waiting for an available printer or port at a print-destination. Spooling jobs frees system resources from waiting for a relatively slow device to provide output, and keeps the contents of each print job separated from the contents of every other print job. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> radio button ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ A circle with text beside it. Radio buttons are combined to show you a fixed set of choices from which only one can be selected. The circle is partially filled when a choice is selected. Contrast with check box. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> downloaded font ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ A soft font copied (downloaded) to the memory of a printer. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> file name ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ A name assigned or declared for a file. The file name includes an extension (if there is one). If you are using HPFS, the file name can be up to 254 characters and can include any number of periods. The following is an example of a path and file name in the HPFS file system where C: is the drive, the first \ is the root, INCOME is the directory, and SALES.FIGURES.FOR.SEPTEMBER is the file name: C:\INCOME\SALES.FIGURES.FOR.SEPTEMBER If you are using the FAT file system, the file name can be up to eight characters and can be followed by an optional three-character extension. You can select a tray-loaded form or indicate that you will feed forms by hand, and specify output bin if your printer has more than one place for holding printed pages. You also can select dual-sided printing for printer models offering this feature. Some programs display a similar window, enabling you to assign these types of properties for a specific document or template. You can also set up default job properties for a particular print queue. When setting up a printer driver, you select device defaults that take effect if neither the queue nor the program supplies job properties. Help for New Patterns Directory ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ Use this field to indicate the location of pattern files you want to install. Usually, you install new patterns from a diskette, so the field contains the initial value A:\. You can type a different path, if, for example, you create your own patterns and store them on your hard disk. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 52. Help for New Patterns ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ This field displays file names for patterns stored in the New patterns directory. To fill the list: 1. Insert the appropriate diskette in drive A, or fill in the New patterns directory field with the location of the patterns on your hard disk. 2. Select Open.
